In 1995, Patrick R. Stewart became the first Indigenous person in British Columbia to own and operate an architecture firm. Today, we are a small team of Indigenous architectural interns and designers, located in West Vancouver, just North of Capilano Reserve, Squamish Nation.

Principal

Sim’oogit Saa-Bax̠ / Dr. Patrick R. Stewart is a survivor of the Sixties Scoop, the son of a Residential School survivor, and a citizen of the Nisga’a Nation; hereditary chief of the Killerwhale House of Daaxan. In Nisga’a, dim sagalts’apkw nisim means “together we build a village," and this sentiment lies at the core of PRSA’s approach, as facilitators of Indigenous community-driven design. Dim sagalts’apkw nisim is also the title of Stewart’s post-doctorate thesis; reported on by The National Post, TIME, and e-flux; and is the root of the original firm name in 1995.

Today, with over 25 years of experience in Architecture, Interiors, Landscape Design, and Master Planning, PRSA remains committed to endeavours that prioritize Indigenous cultures, communities, and the relationships composing them. Additionally, Patrick maintains positions within the following affiliations:

  • RAIC, Governance Committee, Co-Chair, (2022-)
  • RAIC, Indigenous Task Force, Chair, (2022-)
  • RAIC, Truth & Reconciliation Task Force, Co-Chair, (2022-)
  • UIA, Indigenous Peoples Work Programme, Co-Director (2022-)
  • BC, Provincial Aboriginal Homelessness Committee, Chair, (2005-)
